Shanta's

Iconic roti shop on Camp Street, going since the 1960s

A Georgetown institution. Shanta's has been making roti and curry on Camp Street since the 1960s, and the formula has not changed: dhalpuri or paratha roti served with curried chicken, duck, goat, shrimp, beef, or vegetables, plus an essential side of pepper sauce. Order at the counter, pay, take a seat at one of the basic tables.

The food is honest, generous, and famously good — politicians, taxi drivers, and tourists eat here side by side. Lunchtimes are busiest. Bring cash, and ask for the dhal puri if you want the most authentic Indo-Guyanese roti experience.
