A Georgetown institution since the 1970s, New Thriving on Main Street is the city's best-known Cantonese restaurant. The menu is encyclopaedic — chow mein, fried rice, spring rolls, more elaborate seafood and clay-pot dishes — and the cooking is consistent. It is also a useful indicator of the long-standing Chinese-Guyanese presence in the country, descended from indentured labourers brought after emancipation.
The dining room is large and unfussy, ideal for big groups or a quick meal. There are several branches around the city; the Main Street one is the original.
