The Arab League (League of Arab States) has its headquarters in a building on the western edge of Tahrir Square — the formal institutional seat of the 22-member regional body founded in Cairo in 1945. The building is not open to casual visitors but is a significant landmark for anyone interested in Middle Eastern politics and diplomacy: the organisation that attempted to coordinate Arab states through the second half of the 20th century was created and has been permanently based in Cairo.
The green-and-white flag flies outside the main entrance. The building is most visible from the northeast corner of Tahrir Square. Several of the nearby government ministries and diplomatic buildings are also worth noting as part of the government district that clusters around Tahrir.
