The Museum of Modern Egyptian Art is housed within the Cairo Opera House complex on Gezira Island, accessible from the Zamalek or Dokki sides. The collection spans Egyptian fine art from the late 19th century to the present: painting, sculpture, and printmaking from the period when Egyptian artists were navigating between European academic tradition, Orientalism, and the development of a distinctly modern Egyptian visual identity.
The collection is stronger than most visitors expect — the sculpture rooms in particular, with works by Mukhtar and his contemporaries, are genuinely impressive. The museum is rarely crowded, making it one of the more peaceful gallery experiences in Cairo. Admission is cheap; combined tickets with the Opera House complex are available.
