Convent of Saint George

Active Greek Orthodox convent in Coptic Cairo with the shrine of Saint George

The Convent of Saint George (Deir Mar Girgis) in Coptic Cairo is a Greek Orthodox convent dedicated to the saint, built within and around the round towers of the Roman Fortress of Babylon. The convent is active — nuns live here — and the main church contains an extraordinary shrine where pilgrims (both Christian and Muslim) come to pray and to be wrapped in chains as a form of devotion, a practice unique to this church.

The hall of chains and the act of pilgrimage itself are the main interest for visitors: watching Egyptians of different faiths come to pray at the shrine gives an insight into the syncretic religious practices that survive in Egypt. The convent grounds and church are open to visitors during certain hours; call ahead to confirm. The building's incorporation into the Roman towers is architecturally fascinating.
