Qalawun Complex

Mamluk mosque, madrasa, and mausoleum on Al-Muizz Street

The Qalawun Complex is one of the great Mamluk monuments on Al-Muizz Street. Built in the late 13th century by Sultan al-Mansur Qalawun, it combines a mosque, madrasa, hospital, and mausoleum in a dense stretch of Islamic Cairo.

The mausoleum is the highlight, with rich stonework, carved wood, and a solemn interior that gives the complex more weight than many quick stops in the old city. Visit it as part of a slow walk between Bab al-Futuh, Khan el-Khalili, and Al-Azhar.
