Striking Chinese-built performing arts complex staging dance, drama, and highlife

A large performing arts complex near Independence Square, built with Chinese assistance and opened in 1992. The National Dance Company of Ghana and the National Symphony Orchestra are based here, and the venue stages a regular programme of traditional dance, highlife concerts, drama productions, and visiting international performances. A live highlife or traditional dance performance here is one of the best cultural experiences Accra offers, and considerably cheaper than equivalent venues in London or New York.

Check what's on when you arrive — listings are posted at the box office and often in local newspapers. The building itself is architecturally notable: the three curving concrete towers were intended to suggest the sails of a ship, an ambition the structure only partly realises, but the scale and confidence of the design make it a landmark on the city's southern skyline. Combine a visit with Independence Square, a short walk away.

A story
The theatre was a gift from China, completed in 1992, and the architecture is deliberately striking: three sail-shaped concrete towers rising from the ridge above the seafront. It was designed to resemble a ship, which locals have debated ever since.
