Old Protestant Cemetery

Quiet 19th-century cemetery with graves tied to Macau's foreign community

The Old Protestant Cemetery is a calm pocket of 19th-century Macau, just far enough from the busiest lanes to feel set apart. The graves include merchants, missionaries, artists, and diplomats from the foreign community that lived around the old Portuguese port.

Look for the grave of painter George Chinnery, whose sketches and paintings helped define the visual record of colonial Macau and the China coast. The cemetery is small, but it adds a thoughtful stop near the Ruins of St. Paul's and Monte Fort.
