St Dominic's Church

Baroque church in yellow and white at the top of Senado Square

St Dominic's Church stands at the north end of Senado Square, its yellow and white baroque facade looking out over the black-and-white tiled square below. The church was established by Dominican friars around 1587 — one of the oldest churches in Macau — and the present building dates largely from the 17th century. The interior is richly decorated with Portuguese baroque altarpieces and side chapels.

In the 1820s, the first Portuguese newspaper in the Far East, A Abelha da China, was printed here. The bell tower houses a small treasury museum with sacred art collected from Portuguese churches across Asia — vestments, chalices, reliquaries, and religious paintings spanning four centuries of missionary activity.
