All that remains of the 17th-century Jesuit Church of the Mother of God — a carved stone facade, Mannerist in style and dense with reliefs of angels, saints, Chinese lions and Portuguese ships, standing alone at the top of a grand flight of steps after a catastrophic fire gutted the rest of the building in 1835. The most famous sight in Macau and the emblem of the city. Climb up at night for a floodlit view with the old town spread out below.
