Magen Abraham — the Shield of Abraham — is the only synagogue in Ahmedabad and one of just three remaining in Gujarat. The Bene Israel community arrived in the city in the early 20th century from the Konkan coast and built the synagogue in 1934 on Bukhara Mohalla in the old town. The Star of David above the entrance is still polished and the prayer hall, with its mid-century wooden benches, is in regular use for Friday evening services.
The community is now down to a few dozen families and the future of the building is uncertain. Visitors are welcome on weekdays — knock at the gate. A small donation to the upkeep is appreciated.
