Rani no Hajiro

Tombs of Ahmad Shah's queens, ringed by a textile bazaar

Rani no Hajiro — the Queens' Tombs — is a small open quadrangle holding the marble cenotaphs of the wives and daughters of Sultan Ahmad Shah I and his successors. The tombs themselves are unmarked stones; the marble was looted by various invaders over the centuries. What survives is the architecture: a colonnaded courtyard with elegantly proportioned domes and carved screens.

The site is curiously embedded inside a noisy textile bazaar — narrow lanes around the entrance sell bandhani, brocade, and embroidered women's clothing at wholesale prices. Walk in for the architecture; walk out with a bandhani dupatta. The complex is opposite the Tomb of Ahmad Shah himself, behind the Jama Masjid.
