Teen Darwaza

Triple-arched ceremonial gateway from 1415

The Teen Darwaza — Three Gates — was built in 1415 as the eastern ceremonial entrance to the royal square of Bhadra Fort. The three pointed arches in matched yellow sandstone are some of the most photographed in the old city. A traditional lamp of Ahmedabad has been burning continuously in a small alcove on the gate's eastern face since the 16th century — except for a few days during the 2001 earthquake.

The street that runs east from the Teen Darwaza is one of the great market lanes of Ahmedabad — silks, brassware, and brides' trousseaus on display. Watch out for traffic; the gateway is still a busy thoroughfare.
