Sangath (Balkrishna Doshi's Studio)

Doshi's own architecture office, 1981

Sangath — meaning moving together in Sanskrit — is the studio Balkrishna Doshi built for himself in 1981 and continued to work in until his death. The half-buried vaulted ceramic-tiled roof, terraced gardens, and informal sunken meeting spaces became one of his most influential designs and an explicit alternative to International Modernism. The building was added to the Pritzker citation when Doshi won the prize in 2018.

The office is still active and visitors can request a brief look from the gate. The building reads as a series of grass mounds with white-tile vaults — almost agricultural — until the sliding glass doors reveal an interior packed with Indian craft furniture and Doshi's drawings.

A story
Balkrishna Doshi (1927-2023) studied under Le Corbusier in Paris in the 1950s and was one of two Indian architects to win the Pritzker Prize (the other was Charles Correa). He worked from this studio for over forty years and died in 2023; the firm continues. Visits are by appointment but the building is visible from the street and is on every Ahmedabad architecture tour.
