Kochrab Ashram, in a quiet residential lane in Paldi, was Mohandas Gandhi's first ashram in India — he founded it on 25 May 1915, less than a year after returning from South Africa, in a bungalow lent to him by a Gujarati lawyer. The ashram operated for two and a half years before Gandhi moved the experiment to the larger riverbank site at Sabarmati in June 1917.
The bungalow has been preserved with the simple cots, the kitchen, the spinning wheel, and a small museum of photographs and letters from the period. The ashram is less visited than its larger sibling and rewards anyone interested in the formation of Gandhi's Indian politics.
