Cubbon Park

Cubbon Park is the green lung at the centre of Bangalore, a 300-acre spread of trees, walkways, and lawns laid out by the British in 1870. On any given morning you will find joggers, yoga practitioners, families with children, old men reading newspapers, and a remarkable variety of birdlife in the same space. The park is unusually shaded for a city this size — many of the trees are well over a century old — and even in the heat of April it is noticeably cooler than the surrounding streets.

Within the park are several of Bangalore's best institutions: the Government Museum, the Venkatappa Art Gallery, the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium all cluster around its edges. The bandstand and the red-painted Attara Kacheri building (the High Court) are visible from the main paths. It is genuinely one of the better urban parks in India, and the best single place to get a feel for Bangalore on a slow morning.
