Freedom Park

Freedom Park opened in 2008 on the grounds of the former Bangalore Central Jail. The jail itself was a significant site during the independence struggle — numerous freedom fighters were imprisoned here by the British colonial administration. The park preserves sections of the original prison walls and some of the buildings, integrating them into a 12-acre public space of lawns, walkways, and children's play areas.

The design strikes an unusual balance between memorial and recreational park. You can walk along the old prison perimeter, read the plaques about the historical figures imprisoned here, and then sit on the grass in the same space. It is not a heavily visited site, which makes it pleasant on an ordinary weekday. The park is also used for public meetings and political gatherings — fitting for a place with this history.
