Agra's Jama Masjid, built by Shah Jahan in 1648 and dedicated to his favourite daughter Jahanara, stands directly opposite the Agra Fort. The mosque has a striking façade of red sandstone faced with white marble in zigzag courses, three large domes, and a wide open courtyard that can hold ten thousand worshippers.
Most visitors only see it from the fort. It is worth crossing the road: the interior tile and stone work is finer than the photographs suggest, and the surrounding Kinari Bazaar of jewellery, marble inlay, and embroidery shops is one of the liveliest neighbourhoods in old Agra. Modest dress; remove shoes at the entrance.
