Pacitan

South-coast East Java regency known for limestone caves, surf beaches, and quiet Indian Ocean scenery.

Pacitan sits on the south coast of Java, far enough from the island's main rail and highway corridors to feel like a different rhythm. The coast here faces the Indian Ocean, with surf beaches, fishing villages, limestone hills, and caves tucked into the karst country inland.

The beaches are the main draw. Klayar has white sand, sea stacks, and a blowhole; Watu Karung has serious surf; and smaller coves and road-side beaches make the coast good for a slow motorbike or car trip. Inland, the caves give Pacitan its other identity, especially Gong Cave and Tabuhan Cave.

Pacitan is not as easy to reach as Yogyakarta or Solo, and that is part of the appeal. You need your own wheels or patience with buses, but the reward is a quieter version of Java's south-coast drama.
