Pelabuhan Ratu

South Java fishing port and surf town wrapped in Sundanese sea-queen mythology.

Pelabuhan Ratu is a fishing port and beach town on the south coast of West Java, facing the Indian Ocean. Its name means "Port of the Queen", a reference locals connect with Nyai Roro Kidul, the Queen of the Southern Sea in Sundanese mythology.

This is not the polished beach side of Indonesia. The port is busy, the surf can be rough, and the town has a working-coast feel. That is part of the appeal. Boats, fish markets, black-sand beaches, and the long curve of the bay give Pelabuhan Ratu more texture than a simple resort strip.

The town is also a base for trips west toward Cimaja's surf breaks and the Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu Geopark. From Jakarta the journey is slow for the distance, often several hours by road through Bogor and Sukabumi.
