Ujung Genteng

Remote West Java fishing village known for turtle nesting beaches and quiet Indian Ocean surf.

Ujung Genteng is a fishing village on the far southwest coast of Java, where the road finally runs out near the Indian Ocean. It is not an easy hop from Jakarta or Bandung, and that distance protects much of its appeal: low-key beaches, lobster boats, reefy shallows, and a sense of being well beyond Java's urban crush.

The reason to come is Pangumbahan, one of West Java's important green turtle nesting beaches. Watching hatchlings released toward the sea is the kind of simple, memorable travel moment that justifies the long road, provided you treat the beach as wildlife habitat rather than a spectacle staged for visitors.

Ujung Genteng also has surf and beach time, though it is not as developed as Bali, Pangandaran, or Batu Karas. Come with patience, arrange local transport, and expect basic infrastructure. The reward is a wilder south-coast mood within reach of the big West Java cities.
