The Yangon Circular Railway is a 45-km loop that rings the city, stopping at 39 stations and taking about three hours to complete the full circuit. It was built by the British and operates on ageing rolling stock that clanks and rocks through the city's outer suburbs and satellite towns.
Foreigners pay a nominal fee (a few hundred kyat) for a ticket. You can board at Yangon Central Station downtown, or at any intermediate station. The experience is about the journey: crowded local markets at station stops, vendors selling snacks through windows, paddy fields giving way to city suburbs. It is slow, hot, slightly uncomfortable, and one of the best things you can do in Yangon. Bring water and something to sit on.
