Inya Lake is a large lake in the university quarter of north Yangon, about 10 km from downtown. The Inya Lake Hotel on its eastern shore — built by the Soviets in 1960 as a gift to the Burmese government — was for decades the city's principal venue for diplomatic meetings and international events. Aung San Suu Kyi was held under house arrest in her villa nearby for much of the 1990s and 2000s.
The lake is less developed than Kandawgyi and has a quieter atmosphere. The surrounding area contains several universities, giving the neighbourhood a different feel from the commercial downtown. Worth visiting if you have a day to spare.
