Sule Pagoda

The Sule Pagoda stands at the geographical centre of downtown Yangon, rising from the middle of a busy roundabout on Sule Pagoda Road. The stupa is said to be 2,000 years old, making it one of the oldest in Myanmar, though the current structure dates from various reconstructions over the centuries. At 46 metres, it is a smaller and more intimate sight than the Shwedagon, but its setting — surrounded by colonial government buildings — gives it a distinctive character.

The pagoda is an active place of worship throughout the day. The ground floor contains shops selling religious paraphernalia and astrologers offering consultations. The inner walkway circles the stupa and is a calmer alternative to the street chaos outside. Entry is free; donations are accepted.

A story
The British built their colonial grid around the Sule Pagoda — placing it at the centre of a roundabout that became the focal point of downtown Rangoon. The result is a gilded Buddhist stupa rising from the middle of a traffic circle, surrounded by colonial-era government buildings. Pagoda and empire, eye to eye.
