Gyerim

A small woodland near the Wolseong fortress where, according to the Samguk Yusa (the 13th-century Korean chronicle), the founder of the Kim royal clan was discovered as a baby in a golden box under a tree in 65 AD. The grove has been considered sacred since and the trees — a mix of pines, zelkovas, and beeches — are genuinely ancient and atmospheric.

The Gyerim grove takes about 15 minutes to walk through. It sits between the Wolseong fortress area and the Daereungwon tomb park, making it a natural connection on a walking tour of the central historic sites. Free.

A story
In 65 AD, King Talhae of Silla heard a cockerel crowing in this grove and sent a messenger to investigate. The messenger found a gold box hanging from a tree, and inside the box, a baby boy. The king adopted the child, who grew up to found the Kim clan — the dynasty that ruled Silla for most of its existence and from whom most Korean people named Kim claim at least mythological descent.
