Hwangnyongsa was once one of the great temples of Silla Gyeongju, famous for a nine-storey wooden pagoda that has vanished completely from the landscape. The History and Culture Center helps make sense of that absence with models, reconstructions, excavation material, and context for the enormous temple site spread across the fields nearby.
Visit it before walking the Hwangnyongsa ruins, not after. Without the centre the site can look like low foundations and open ground; with it, the scale of the lost complex becomes much easier to imagine. It pairs naturally with Bunhwangsa and Donggung Palace on an east-side Gyeongju history circuit.
