Myeonghwalsanseong Fortress is part of Gyeongju's wider Silla landscape, a mountain fortress site on the eastern side of the city. The remains are less immediately legible than Bulguksa or the royal tombs, but they point to the defensive geography behind the old capital.
It suits travellers who have time to go beyond the central heritage circuit. The reward is a quieter walk and a broader sense of Gyeongju as a fortified royal landscape, not only a collection of temples, ponds, and burial mounds.
