Ebu Bekër Mosque

The Great Mosque of Shkodër, finished in 1995 on the site of the original Fushë Çela mosque destroyed by the Communist regime in 1967. It is the largest mosque in Albania, with two slender minarets framing a vast white-rendered prayer hall and a courtyard wide enough for several hundred worshippers at Friday prayers.

Non-Muslims are welcome to enter outside prayer times; women are given a headscarf at the door if needed. The interior is plain by Ottoman standards — clean lines, blue and white tilework, a simple wooden minbar — and worth a half hour. The wall at the entrance carries a small memorial to the religious leaders killed under Hoxha's anti-religion campaign in 1967.
