St Stephen's Cathedral

The seat of the Catholic Archdiocese of Shkodër-Pult, and the largest Catholic cathedral in the Balkans by floor area. The current building dates from 1858 in a neo-Renaissance style, with a long aisled nave under a single barrel vault and a small lantern crossing over the altar. It is plain by Italian standards, ornate by Albanian ones.

The cathedral was closed by the Communist regime in 1967 and used as a sports hall — basketball court markings were painted onto the marble floor, and most of the original interior fittings were destroyed. Restoration began in 1991. Look for the small chapel on the south side: it commemorates the Catholic clergy executed under Hoxha, several of whom were beatified by Pope Francis in 2016.
