Banje Beach

Banje is the most popular and central beach in Dubrovnik, a pebbly cove immediately east of the Ploče Gate with direct views back to the city walls and the old town. The beach itself is not exceptional by Croatian standards — gravel and pebbles rather than sand — but the setting is remarkable. Swimming with the medieval walls of Dubrovnik as your backdrop is an experience difficult to replicate anywhere else on the Adriatic.

A beach bar and sun lounger operation occupies most of Banje in summer. If you want to avoid the fee, there is a small public section at the western end of the beach. The water is clear and the swimming is good. Water taxis run from the old port to Banje and to other beaches along the coast, which is often quicker and more pleasant than walking in the summer heat.
