Orlando's Column stands in Luža Square at the eastern end of the Stradun, in front of the Clock Tower and next to the Sponza Palace. The statue depicts Roland (Orlando in Italian), a legendary knight of Charlemagne's court who — according to a local legend that has no historical basis — defended Dubrovnik from Saracen attack. The republic adopted Orlando as a symbol of civic freedom, and the column was used to proclaim official announcements and to punish wrongdoers.
The figure is slightly stiff by Renaissance standards, but its setting is exceptional. Luža Square is the civic heart of the old town, surrounded by the most important public buildings of the republic. The square fills with performers and audience during the Summer Festival. Orlando's outstretched arm — the "Ragusan ell" measurement — can be seen if you look closely at the elbow.
