Red History Museum

The Red History Museum occupies a vault below the Stradun and offers an interactive walk-through of everyday life in communist Yugoslavia. This is not a conventional history exhibition — the approach is immersive, with reconstructed rooms, period objects, archival footage, and audio guides that evoke the texture of daily life under Tito's regime: the food, the furniture, the propaganda, the peculiar mix of state control and relative consumer freedom that made Yugoslav socialism different from its Soviet neighbours.

The museum is opinionated and honest about the compromises people made to live normal lives under a one-party system. For visitors who know nothing about Yugoslav history it is revelatory; for older Croatian visitors it is often a complicated emotional experience. Particularly good for those who have been to similar exhibits in East Germany or Hungary and want to understand how Yugoslavia differed. Located in Strossmayerov Put, below the southern walls.
