Gundulićeva Poljana (Market Square)

Gundulićeva Poljana is the principal square of the old town south of the Stradun, framed by the Cathedral, the Rector's Palace, and the Church of St. Blaise. Every morning except Sunday it hosts a produce market selling fresh fruit, vegetables, honey, lavender, olive oil, and handmade goods. This is where Dubrovnik's residents do their shopping — a genuinely local scene embedded in the most historic part of the city.

The statue at the centre of the square depicts Ivan Gundulić, the 17th-century Ragusan poet who wrote the epic "Osman" — a celebration of Polish victories over the Ottomans. He is considered the greatest poet in the Croatian literary tradition. The square fills with café tables in summer and becomes one of the more pleasant places in the old town to sit with a coffee and watch the world go by.
