Onofrio's Fountain

Onofrio's Great Fountain stands just inside the Pile Gate at the western end of the Stradun, a large domed polygon decorated with carved stone masks. It was built in 1444 as part of the water supply system that brought fresh water to Dubrovnik from the Šumet spring near Rijeka Dubrovačka, and it functioned as the main public water source for the old town for centuries.

The fountain still runs — the masks still pour water — and on hot summer days you will see locals and visitors drinking from them. It is a good place to fill a water bottle. The smaller Onofrio Fountain at the other end of the Stradun, in Luža Square, was built by the same engineer at the same time, but was damaged beyond full restoration in the 1667 earthquake.

A story
Onofrio della Cava, the Neapolitan engineer who designed the aqueduct that brought water to Dubrovnik from a source 12 kilometres away, completed the system in 1444 — a remarkable feat of medieval civil engineering. The fountain at the Pile Gate end of the Stradun was the public face of the system: sixteen carved stone masks around the dome spouted water continuously, allowing travellers and traders entering the city to drink, wash, and water their animals before entering. Many of the masks were damaged in the 1667 earthquake.
