Porte d'Aix

Neoclassical triumphal arch at Marseille's old city gate

Marseille's own triumphal arch, the Porte d'Aix, stands where the old road from Aix-en-Provence entered the city. Built in 1839 by architect Michel-Robert Penchaud, it commemorates French military victories. The arch is modeled on Roman examples and decorated with reliefs depicting the battles of Austerlitz and Marengo. It marks the top of the Cours Belsunce and makes a useful landmark for orienting yourself in the city center.
