The oldest surviving part of the Cathedral of Marseille, standing right beside the vast 19th-century Cathédrale de la Major. What's left is the apse — the rounded Provençal-Romanesque chevet dating from the 12th century — much of the original church was demolished to make way for the newer, far larger building. The contrast between the two is striking: the weathered, intimate Romanesque stonework next to the ornate Byzantine-style bulk of the Nouvelle Major. Worth a look as you walk the esplanade above the Vieux-Port.
