Palais du Pharo

Napoléon III's seafront palace with the best panoramic views of the Vieux-Port

Built for Napoléon III on a rocky promontory above the entrance to the Vieux-Port, the Palais du Pharo was never actually used by the Emperor — he gave it to the city of Marseille instead. The palace itself now hosts conferences, but the grounds are freely open and the terrace offers one of the finest views in Marseille: the old port below, the islands of the Frioul on the horizon, and Notre-Dame de la Garde on the hill above. Sunset from here is hard to beat.
