La Criée

National theatre in a converted 1909 fish auction hall

La Criée — the name means the fish auction — opened as the Théâtre National de Marseille in 1981, when the old fish-auction building on the Quai de Rive Neuve was converted by Marcel Maréchal. It is one of France's national theatres, with a main stage of 800 seats and a smaller space for 250. The programme mixes contemporary French drama with touring productions and occasional opera and dance. The building preserves the industrial bones of its former life — high ceilings, cast-iron pillars — which gives it a rawness that suits the city.
