Hôpital Caroline

Restored quarantine hospital on the Frioul islands

A striking neoclassical quarantine hospital on the Île Ratonneau in the Frioul archipelago, designed by Michel-Robert Penchaud and completed in 1828 to isolate sailors arriving with yellow fever. The building was carefully planned to keep the sick separated from the healthy, with open-air arcades to let the mistral blow through. After decades of abandonment, it has been partially restored and now hosts exhibitions, concerts, and cultural events during the summer months. The setting alone — stone arches framing views of the open Mediterranean — makes it worth the boat trip from the Vieux-Port.
