Housed in a 17th-century private mansion, the Musée Cantini holds one of France's strongest collections of 20th-century art. The core strength is Fauvist and Surrealist work — Matisse, Dufy, Ernst, Miro, Masson, Picabia, Derain — built up from the 1960s onward through a series of generous donations. Post-war and contemporary pieces by Bacon, Giacometti, Dubuffet, and Tapies round out the collection.
The building itself is worth attention: a graceful hôtel particulier from 1694, donated to the city by marble merchant Jules Cantini. Metro: Estrangin-Préfecture.
