Augustiner Museum

Upper Rhine art and sculpture in a former Augustinian monastery

Freiburg's main museum occupies the church and cloister of a former Augustinian monastery on the Augustinerplatz. The collection covers more than a thousand years of art from the Upper Rhine — Black Forest panel paintings, baroque sculpture, and a fine room of nineteenth-century landscapes. The strongest holdings are medieval: works by Matthias Grünewald, Hans Baldung Grien, and Lucas Cranach.

The building itself is part of the visit. A glass walkway lets you look down on the nave from the height of a former choir loft, and the original Münster gargoyles and statues are arranged here at close range. The roof terrace, reached through the modern wing added by architect Christoph Mäckler in 2010, offers one of the best free views over the old city.

A story
The original stone sculptures and stained-glass windows from the Münster were moved into the museum to protect them from weather and pollution. You can now stand at eye level with carved figures that for centuries were visible only as silhouettes a hundred metres above the square.
