Salzstrasse

Pedestrianised lane lined with cafés and small shops

The Salzstrasse — Salt Street — was the historic route along which salt from the mines at Bad Dürrnberg near Salzburg arrived in Freiburg. Today it is one of the prettiest pedestrian lanes in the old town, running east from the Bertoldsbrunnen towards the Schwabentor, lined with small shops, cafés, and the Augustinerplatz halfway down.

The Bächle along its centre is wider than on most streets and well stocked with paper boats. Look up at the building numbers and you will see traditional German house signs — a lion, a swan, a star — that pre-date street numbers. The street is busy in the day and quiet in the evening once the shops close.
