Uniseum

Small museum of the University of Freiburg's 550-year history

The Uniseum is a free, compact museum tucked inside the old university building on Bertoldstrasse. It tells the story of the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität from its founding in 1457 — making it one of Germany's oldest — to the present, with original lecture-room benches, student union pennants, and rooms devoted to the university's twenty-three Nobel laureates.

The most interesting sections cover the difficult years: the university's role under National Socialism, when the philosopher Martin Heidegger served briefly as rector and gave his notorious inaugural address, and the 1960s student movement that transformed the institution. Open Tuesday to Saturday afternoons.
