Augustinerplatz

The most relaxed square in town, full of students on summer evenings

The Augustinerplatz, in front of the Augustiner Museum, is the place where Freiburg's students go to sit out summer evenings. The square slopes down from west to east, with broad sandstone steps that double as informal seating, and a couple of bars on the western edge that sell beer to take outside.

On warm nights it fills up with hundreds of people, all sitting on the steps with bottles, talking and watching the light fade off the Münster spire behind. It is one of the simple pleasures of being in Freiburg — and a reminder that this is a young city, with students making up a quarter of the population.
