Schwabentor

Medieval gate tower on the edge of the old town

One of two surviving medieval gate towers in Freiburg, the Schwabentor dates to the early 13th century. The painted mural on the town-facing side depicts a Swabian merchant who, according to local legend, tried to buy the city with a chest full of stones instead of gold.

The tower sits at the southeastern corner of the old town, marking where the road once led toward the Höllental valley and on to Lake Constance. Today it anchors a lively intersection where trams rattle past and the narrow streets of the Insel quarter branch off to the west.

You can walk through the archway freely. The upper floors house a small tin-figure museum, though opening hours are irregular.
