University of Freiburg

One of Germany's oldest universities, founded in 1457

The Albert-Ludwigs-Universitat Freiburg, founded in 1457, is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Germany. Its buildings are spread across the old town, but the heart of the campus sits along the western side of the Altstadt. The main university building (Kollegiengebaude I) on Bertoldstrasse dates from 1911 and features a striking neo-Renaissance facade. The adjacent University Library, rebuilt in a modern style after wartime destruction, is worth a look for its architecture. With over 20,000 students, the university gives Freiburg much of its youthful energy and keeps the city's cafes, bookshops, and bars lively year-round.
