The Alter Friedhof — the old cemetery — is a small, peaceful park north of the centre, full of nineteenth-century gravestones and overgrown ivy. At its eastern edge is the tomb of Caroline Walter, a young woman who died of tuberculosis in 1867 aged twenty-three.
Her grieving sister commissioned a life-sized marble effigy of Caroline lying as if asleep on top of the tomb. Soon after the burial, fresh flowers began to appear on the statue every day. They are still there today, 150 years on, never wilted, always renewed — and nobody has ever been caught leaving them. The cemetery itself is open daylight hours and free to visit.
