The Theater Freiburg is the city's main repertory house, mounting opera, ballet, drama, and musicals across four stages — a big house, a small house, a studio, and the open-air Münsterplatz in summer. The current building dates from 1910, was destroyed in 1944, and rebuilt in plain post-war style.
Programming is strong on contemporary opera and German theatre, with around thirty productions a year. The city subsidises tickets heavily and students get especially good deals. Even if you don't see a performance, the theatre's Café Hermann is a useful daytime stop on Bertoldstrasse.
