Wallgraben-Theater

Intimate basement theatre staging modern German plays

The Wallgraben-Theater is Freiburg's main fringe theatre, housed in a small basement venue near the Rathaus. Founded in 1962, it stages contemporary German-language drama, classics, and one-person shows, with a focus on tightly written plays for casts of two to four actors.

The theatre seats only about 120, which means there is no bad seat and the actors are close enough to make eye contact. Performances are entirely in German, so the venue is best for visitors with the language. Tickets are inexpensive by big-city standards.
