WaldMenschen Sculpture Trail

Wooden carved figures in the woods east of town

The WaldMenschen ("forest people") are a small group of weathered wooden sculptures hidden in the woods around the Waldhaus environmental education centre, a short drive or a long walk east of Freiburg into the foothills of the Black Forest. The figures, carved from tree trunks by visiting artists since the 1990s, range from human silhouettes to abstract totems and are slowly being reclaimed by moss and rot — which is the point.

The trail is a couple of kilometres long, mostly flat, and easy to combine with a longer hike on the Schauinsland or a visit to the Waldhaus exhibitions. There are no signs to make it easy to find, which adds to the discovery. Best in late autumn when the leaves are down.
